Upon the grass untroubling。
Again she fled察but swift he came。
Tin┣viel Tin┣viel
He called her by her elvish name察
And there she halted listening。
One moment stood she察and a spell
His voice laid on her此Beren came察
And doom fell on Tin┣viel
That in his arms lay glistening。
As Beren looked into her eyes
Within the shadows of her hair察
The trembling starlight of the skies
He saw there mirrored shimmering。
Tin┣viel the elven´fair察
Immortal maiden elven´wise察
About him cast her shadowy hair
And arms like silver glimmering。
Long was the way that fate them bore察
O'er stony mountains cold and grey察
Through halls of iron and darkling door察
And woods of nightshade morrowless。
The Sundering Seas between them lay察
And yet at last they met once more察
And long ago they passed away
In the forest singing sorrowless。
Strider sighed and paused before he spoke again。 'That is a song' hesaid察'in the mode that is called _ann´thennath_ among the Elves察but is hardto render in our mon Speech察and this is but a rough echo of it。 It tellsof the meeting of Beren son of Barahir and L┣thien Tin┣viel。 Beren was amortal man察but L┣thien was the daughter of Thingol察a King of Elves uponMiddle´earth when the world was young察and she was the fairest maiden that hasever been among all the children of this world。 As the stars above the mistsof the Northern lands was her loveliness察and in her face was a shining light。
In those days the Great Enemy察of whom Sauron of Mordor was but a servant察
dwelt in Angband in the North察and the Elves of the West ing back toMiddle´earth made war upon him to regain the Silmarils which he had stolen察
and the fathers of Men aided the Elves。 But the Enemy was victorious andBarahir was slain察and Beren escaping through great peril came over theMountains of Terror into the hidden Kingdom of Thingol in the forest ofNeldoreth。 There he beheld L┣thien singing and dancing in a glade beside theenchanted river Esgalduin察and he named her Tin┣viel察that is Nightingale inthe language of old。 Many sorrows befell them afterwards察and they were partedlong。 Tin┣viel rescued Beren from the dungeons of Sauron察and together theypassed through great dangers察and cast down even the Great Enemy from histhrone察and took from his iron crown one of the three Silmarils察brightest ofall jewels察to be the bride´price of L┣thien to Thingol her father。 Yet at thelast Beren was slain by the Wolf that came from the gates of Angband察and hedied in the arms of Tin┣viel。 But she chose mortality察and to die from theworld察so that she might follow him察and it is sung that they met again beyondthe Sundering Seas察and after a brief time walking alive once more in thegreen woods察together they passed察long ago察beyond the confines of thisworld。 So it is that L┣thien Tin┣viel alone of the Elf´kindred has died indeed
and left the world察and they have lost her whom they most loved。 But from herthe lineage of the Elf´lords of old descended among Men。 There live still

those of whom L┣thien was the foremother察and it is said that her line shallnever fail。 Elrond of Rivendell is of that Kin。 For of Beren and L┣thien was
born Dior Thingol's heir察and of him Elwing the White whom E。rendil wedded察hethat sailed his ship out of the mists of the world into the seas of heavenwith the Silmaril upon his brow。 And of E。rendil came the Kings of N┣menor察
that is Westernesse。'
As Strider was speaking they watched his strange eager face察dimly lit inthe red glow of the wood´fire。 His eyes shone察and his voice was rich anddeep。 Above him was a black starry sky。 Suddenly a pale light appeared overthe crown of Weathertop behind him。 The waxing moon was climbing slowly abovethe hill that overshadowed them察and the stars above the hill´top faded。
The story ended。 The hobbits moved and stretched。 'Look' said Merry。
'The Moon is rising此it must be getting late。'
The others looked up。 Even as they did so察they saw on the top of thehill something small and dark against the glimmer of the moonrise。 It wasperhaps only a large stone or jutting rock shown up by the pale light。
Sam and Merry got up and walked away from the fire。 Frodo and Pippinremained seated in silence。 Strider was watching the moonlight on the hillintently。 All seemed quiet and still察but Frodo felt a cold dread creepingover his heart察now that Strider was no longer speaking。 He huddled closer tothe fire。 At that moment Sam came running back from the edge of the dell。
'I don't know what it is' he said察'but I suddenly felt afraid。 Idurstn't go outside this dell for any money察I felt that something wascreeping up the slope。'
'Did you _see_ anything' asked Frodo察springing to his feet。
'No察sir。 I saw nothing察but I didn't stop to look。'
'I saw something' said Merry察'or I thought I did C away westwards wherethe moonlight was falling on the flats beyond the shadow of the hill´tops察I_thought_ there were two or three black shapes。 They seemed to be moving thisway。'
'Keep close to the fire察with your faces outward' cried Strider。 'Getsome of the longer sticks ready in your hands'
For a breathless time they sat there察silent and alert察with their backsturned to the wood´fire察each gazing into the shadows that encircled them。
Nothing happened。 There was no sound or movement in the night。 Frodo stirred察
feeling that he must break the silence此he longed to shout out aloud。
'Hush' whispered Strider。 'What's that' gasped Pippin at the samemoment。
Over the lip of the little dell察on the side away from the hill察theyfelt察rather than saw察a shadow rise察one shadow or more than one。 Theystrained their eyes察and the shadows seemed to grow。 Soon there could be nodoubt此
three or four tall black figures were standing there on the slope察
looking down on them。 So black were they that they seemed like black holes inthe deep shade behind them。 Frodo thought that he heard a faint hiss as ofvenomous breath and felt a thin piercing chill。 Then the shapes slowlyadvanced。
Terror overcame Pippin and Merry察and they threw themselves flat on theground。 Sam shrank to Frodo's side。 Frodo was hardly less terrified than hispanions察he was quaking as if he was bitter cold察but his terror wasswallowed up in a sudden temptation to put on the Ring。 The desire to do thislaid hold of him察and he could think of nothing else。 He did not forget theBarrow察nor the message of Gandalf察but something seemed to be pelling himto disregard all warnings察and he longed to yield。 Not with the hope ofescape察or of doing anything察either good or bad此he simply felt that he musttake the Ring and put it on his finger。 He could not speak。 He felt Samlooking at him察as if he knew that his master was in some great trouble察buthe could not turn towards him。 He shut his eyes and struggled for a while察butresistance became unbearable察and at last he slowly drew out the chain察andslipped the Ring on the forefinger of his left hand。

Immediately察though everything else remained as before察dim and dark察theshapes became terribly clear。 He was able to see beneath their blackwrappings。 There were five tall figures此two standing on the lip of the dell
